Seattle police have relied on King County sheriff's drones for help inside the city, even though the Seattle Police Department (SPD) says it has no plans to acquire its own aircraft under Seattle's surveillance-technology rules, The Seattle Focal reported on October 20.
The sheriff's office has 35 drones and about 50 deputies certified to operate them, The Seattle Focal reported. Public flight records show the aircraft have flown in Seattle more than 15 times since December 2025, and the county says its drones may be used in six types of situations, including emergencies involving armed suspects or natural disasters, search-and-rescue operations, security checks and crime-scene documentation.
The Seattle Times, in its own report on why police drones are flying in Seattle despite the city's surveillance policy, likewise noted that law-enforcement agencies across western Washington are using drones more and more while SPD says it has no plans to obtain its own. SPD spokesperson Sergeant Patrick Michaud told The Seattle Focal the department sold its drones and has not revived the programme Seattle abandoned after public opposition in 2013.
Seattle's 2017 surveillance ordinance requires City Council approval before city departments adopt technology capable of recording its surroundings, The Seattle Focal reported. City officials say the county is not subject to that ordinance, while privacy advocates warn that oversight and limits on future use matter — a dispute about who sets the rules when a neighbouring agency flies the cameras.
The report gave examples of the flights: a county drone flew over Seattle Center four times in one evening after a July mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival, recording photos and video for the investigation according to Michaud, and sheriff's deputies also used drones to help secure airspace around the stadium during Seattle's summer World Cup matches, The Seattle Focal reported.
What is solid
- King County sheriff's drones have assisted Seattle police inside Seattle, with 35 county drones, about 50 certified deputies and more than 15 Seattle flights since December 2025 in public records — The Seattle Focal.
- SPD says it sold its drones, has not revived its own programme and has no plans to acquire its own — The Seattle Focal and The Seattle Times.
What is only claimed
- Whether county flights inside Seattle should follow Seattle's 2017 surveillance ordinance is disputed in effect: city officials say the county is not subject to it, while privacy advocates argue oversight and future-use limits are needed — The Seattle Focal. No court ruling on that point was reported.
