A dispute that began aboard a Metro coach bus in Seattle's Rainier Valley ended in gunfire on the street on Wednesday night, October 28, leaving two men wounded and a gunman on the run, the Seattle Police Department said. Officers were called at about 10:10 p.m. to Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street, in the Brighton neighbourhood of South Seattle, and found a 26-year-old man shot in the wrist and a 33-year-old man shot in the leg.

What happened at Rainier and Holden

According to the Seattle Police Department's official blotter, written by Detective Brian Pritchard and published late on October 28, officers arrived at the corner of Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street at about 10:10 p.m. and found both men suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers gave first aid at the scene until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived. Both victims were then taken to Harborview Medical Center with injuries police described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators say the sequence began before the shots. The department's investigation found that an altercation between the two victims and the suspect began on a Metro coach bus and continued as they got off the bus. Shortly afterwards, the suspect shot both men and left the area westbound on South Holden Street. FOX 13 Seattle, reporting independently the same night, likewise placed the shooting near Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street in the Brighton neighbourhood at around 10 p.m. and confirmed two people were injured.

The search, and the unit now investigating

Officers searched the area with the help of the department's K9 Unit, but they were unable to locate the suspect, the blotter said. The case has now passed to detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit, who are investigating and working to determine what led up to the shooting — including what the altercation on the bus was about and exactly where, between the bus and the street corner, the shots were fired. Police have not released a description of the suspect, have not said whether a weapon was recovered, and have not announced any arrest.

Police appeal for information

Anyone with information about the Rainier Valley shooting is asked to call the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000. The department's incident number for the case is 26-322026, South Precinct, beat S2.

Why a bus dispute matters beyond one corner

The detail that the altercation began on a Metro coach bus is central to this case. King County Metro buses carry thousands of riders through Rainier Valley every day and night, including shift workers heading home late — the very readers this story most affects, among them Punjabi and other South Asian families who live and work across South Seattle and rely on late buses and on Rainier Avenue's shops and gurdwaras. When a quarrel that starts between passengers ends with two men shot on the pavement outside, it raises questions that go beyond one arrest: what happened on the bus, whether the driver or other passengers saw the suspect clearly, and what bus camera footage may show. Police have not yet answered those questions publicly.

Rainier Avenue South is one of South Seattle's main corridors, running through the Rainier Valley and the Brighton neighbourhood past homes, small businesses and bus stops that stay busy late into the evening. A shooting at 10:10 p.m. at a marked intersection on that corridor — followed by a police and K9 search through surrounding streets — is the kind of incident that keeps a whole neighbourhood awake, even when, as here, both victims are expected to survive.

What happens next

The Gun Violence Reduction Unit's investigation is the next step. Detectives are expected to review Metro bus footage and any street cameras around Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street, interview the two victims and other bus passengers, and work to identify the man who, police say, fled westbound on South Holden Street. Both victims were in Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries — a gunshot wound to the wrist for the 26-year-old and to the leg for the 33-year-old — and their accounts will be central to the case. Until a suspect is identified, police are asking anyone who was on that bus or near that corner at about 10:10 p.m. on October 28 to call the Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.
