After nearly 10 months of construction and long-term lane reductions, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is preparing to restore northbound Interstate 5 across Seattle's Ship Canal Bridge to its normal lane configuration, the agency announced on Wednesday, October 21. If the remaining work stays on schedule, crews could remove the long-term lane reductions as early as the weekend of Friday, October 30, to Monday, November 2, marking the end of major Revive I-5 work for 2026.

Removing the work zone will require a weekend-long full closure of northbound I-5 from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street, WSDOT said. Crews will reconfigure lanes, pick up pinned barriers and restripe lanes and shoulders. Once the pickup is complete, the I-5 express lanes will return to normal operations and major scheduled Revive I-5 closures will conclude for the year.

Weather could still push the date
The schedule remains weather dependent, WSDOT warned. Some remaining work and the work-zone removal itself require dry conditions, and if the weather does not cooperate, the long-term lane reductions will remain in place until crews have a suitable weekend to finish the work. The same WSDOT release was carried by EIN News on October 21.

Work will not end entirely with the milestone. Drivers should continue to expect some overnight closures of mainline I-5, lane reductions and early closures of the express lanes while crews continue bridge maintenance and drainage improvements on the underside of the Ship Canal Bridge, WSDOT said. Crews will return in 2027 to work on the southbound lanes.

For truckers and commuters who use I-5 through Seattle — the West Coast's main north-south freight corridor — the milestone matters: one more full weekend closure, then the normal lane pattern returns, weather permitting. Yaani: plan for a closed northbound I-5 across central Seattle on the Oct. 30–Nov. 2 weekend, and check WSDOT's real-time updates before rolling, because rain can push the whole move by a week.
