A driver who authorities say fired at a Washington State Patrol vehicle during a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 5 is in custody after spike strips, a foot chase past a Taco Bell and shots fired by a sheriff's deputy brought the Sunday-morning chase to an end near Rochester, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office said in a news release published on November 1.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies assisted state troopers on northbound Interstate 5 near milepost 88 at approximately 6:18 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, after the suspect reportedly fired at a pursuing patrol vehicle. Milepost 88 sits in Thurston County just south of the State Route 12 interchange, by the Rochester and Grand Mound area, on the freeway between Olympia and Centralia.

How the chase unfolded, from the dispatch recordings
Recordings of Thurston County dispatch traffic from that morning, compiled into a public timeline, trace the pursuit from about 6:13 a.m., when a silver GMC Terrain with no licence plate fled southbound on I-5 near Centralia at speeds above 100 miles per hour. A trooper took up the pursuit at about 6:15 a.m. The vehicle left the freeway at the Harrison Avenue area, ran red lights through Chehalis streets including Main Street, and then came back onto I-5 heading north at more than 100 miles per hour.

At about 6:17 a.m., the pursuing trooper can be heard on the dispatch audio radioing words to the effect of “he's shooting at me” and asking for the county to be notified — the moment the chase turned from a traffic pursuit into a shooting investigation. Dispatchers also noted a possibly related earlier shooting in Tacoma involving a similar vehicle; authorities have not publicly confirmed any connection, and Awaaz Punjab is reporting that detail only as something dispatchers discussed on the radio.

Spike strips, a fenced field, a deputy’s shots — and a Taco Bell
Spike strips brought the suspect's vehicle to a stop on the freeway, the sheriff's office said. The suspect then ran into a nearby fenced area. When deputies confronted him there, he attempted to flee and a Taser was deployed. Authorities said the suspect displayed a firearm during that encounter, prompting one deputy to fire multiple shots.

The shots did not end the chase. The suspect kept running toward a nearby Taco Bell, where several deputies confronted him again. A Taser was deployed, and he was taken into custody. A second dispatch timeline from the same morning records shots reported in the railroad tunnel under State Route 12 near I-5 at Grand Mound at about 6:35 a.m., the suspect on the ground with his hands up, and officers searching near a 76 gas station for a possibly discarded gun — the closing minutes of the same incident, by the dispatchers' account.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries related to the Taser deployment. The release did not report any gunshot injuries — despite shots being fired by both the suspect and a deputy — and no law-enforcement personnel were injured. The sheriff's office has not released the suspect's name, and everything in its release is described as preliminary.
Why an outside team is now investigating
Because a deputy fired his weapon, the shooting itself is now being investigated independently. The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team — the multi-agency team that handles officer-involved shootings in this part of Washington — responded to conduct the investigation after the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations declined the case, the sheriff's office said. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office will not participate in that investigation. Region 3 investigators will handle all future updates and will release the names of the deputies involved.

What this means on the I-5 corridor
Interstate 5 is the spine of western Washington — the route that links Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and Portland and carries a heavy share of the region's freight. A large number of Punjabi truckers and warehouse and logistics workers in Washington drive this corridor daily, and milepost 88 is on the stretch many of them use between the South Sound and southwest Washington. A dawn pursuit in which shots were fired at a trooper is exactly the kind of incident that can close lanes and snarl that corridor; on Sunday, remarkably, it ended with no member of the public and no officer reported hurt.
What happens next
Once the Region 3 investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Thurston County Prosecutor's Office for review — the step that decides any criminal charges arising from the deputy's shots, separately from whatever charges the suspect faces over the pursuit and the alleged shots at the trooper. Authorities emphasised that the information released so far is preliminary. Awaaz Punjab will update this story when Region 3 releases the deputies' names, when the suspect is identified and booked, and when prosecutors announce charging decisions.
