The White House has said more than three million migrants have left the United States since President Donald Trump returned to office — that is over 30 lakh people — as it unveiled a sweeping assessment of its immigration crackdown titled 'How President Trump Ended the Border Invasion and Restored American Sovereignty.'

According to the administration, the population living in the country without legal status has fallen by at least 2.3 million (yaani 23 lakh), which it described as the largest sustained reduction in modern American history. It said nearly 1.2 million people (12 lakh) had been deported or removed, while immigration authorities had carried out approximately 1.3 million arrests (13 lakh). Reporting by Madhyamam, with inputs from IANS, and by Bilkul Online noted the same figures and stressed that they were presented by the administration itself and were not accompanied by a comprehensive independent audit.

The White House said illegal crossings at the southern border fell by 95 per cent from levels recorded during the Biden administration, and that nationwide immigration encounters dropped below 380,000 in fiscal year 2026, compared with approximately 2.7 million a year under the previous administration. It also claimed no migrants apprehended by the Border Patrol were released into the United States during the fiscal year, that the immigration court backlog had fallen from more than 4.18 million cases to under 3.09 million, and that asylum was now granted in just 7 per cent of cases, down from more than 50 per cent earlier. The United States recorded negative net migration in 2025 for the first time in at least 50 years, the statement said.

For Indian and Punjabi readers, several parts of the assessment matter directly. The White House said more than 300,000 visas have been revoked, H-1B entry has been restricted unless a petition is accompanied by a $100,000 payment, H-1B registrations for fiscal year 2027 fell by 38 per cent under a new system, and automatic extensions of some work authorisations have ended. It also highlighted strict English-proficiency and residency requirements for commercial driver's licence holders, saying more than 20,000 truckers who failed enhanced English standards were removed from US roads — a claim Punjabi truck drivers in the US will watch closely.

Awaaz Punjab is reporting these numbers as the administration's claims, with attribution, because the White House statement did not provide a full independent audit of the totals. Sources: The White House, Madhyamam (IANS inputs) and Bilkul Online.
