Milwaukee police said officers responded shortly before 9 a.m. on October 24 to a home just north of 53rd and Center, on the city's northwest side. Police said the 6-year-old obtained the firearm and discharged it, striking the 4-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office was also dispatched to the home, FOX6 reported.

A family member told TMJ4 the two children had been playing a game of “cops and robbers” when they got hold of the weapon, and said the family believed the gun had been stored securely and did not know how the children were able to access it. That account is the family's; how the firearm was stored has not been established by investigators in the reporting available.

Police said a 16-year-old was taken into custody in connection with the incident for possessing a firearm. Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for review, police said. The teenager is not named in this report.

Milwaukee police urged the public to take proper steps to keep firearms out of the reach of children and to store and secure them properly, TMJ4 reported. Neighbours described a heavy police response at the home on Saturday morning.
