Four people were killed and four others injured early on Monday, 19 October, when a speeding truck hit a Scorpio from behind on the overbridge near Roopapur village on the Prayagraj–Varanasi National Highway in Varanasi district, according to Hindusthan Samachar and Jagran reports. The accident took place in the Mirzamurad police station area, about 27 km from the district headquarters.
Police said eight youths from Shivpur were returning after darshan at the Maa Vindhyavasini temple in Vindhyachal and their vehicle had stopped on the overbridge — reports said they were shooting reels/selfies — when the truck, coming from the Prayagraj side, rammed into it; the truck driver fled the scene.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Veer Singh of Rajatalab Circle said the deceased were identified as Aman Yadav, Golu and Alok Mishra, while a fourth person had not yet been identified; the injured included Kanhaiya Yadav and Nikhil Kumar. One person fell about 30 feet below the overbridge and others trapped in the vehicle were cut out with a gas cutter, reports said. The Scorpio's registration was reported as UP 65 EB 2199.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the accident, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families, directed officials to expedite relief work and assist the families, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
