Kolkata, Oct 26: A young man and his father were allegedly forced to walk naked on a street in Kolkata's southern outskirts after the family of the woman he is in a relationship with objected to the couple, in an incident in the Bashundhara Park area under Sarsuna police station limits that triggered tension and public outrage. Three persons, including the woman's father and uncle, have been arrested, Kolkata Police said on Monday, IANS reported.

According to the reports, the young woman was in a relationship with a man from Sarsuna in the Behala area, and her family had opposed the relationship from the beginning. The disagreement allegedly escalated on Sunday after the couple was caught in an intimate situation by the woman's relatives.

The young man was allegedly confined inside the house and severely assaulted by the woman's father and uncle. His father was subsequently called to the spot, and the woman's family allegedly handed the father a gun in front of his son and asked him to shoot him, according to the police account reported by IANS.

Police said the family allegedly offered the young man two options — face death or walk naked on the street — and that the young man and his father were then allegedly forced to walk naked in public. A friend of the young man was also reportedly assaulted and subjected to similar humiliation. All of these details are allegations in the complaint and in police statements, and the case is under investigation.

"Based on the complaint lodged by the young man's family, three persons have been arrested. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections. They would be produced in court today. The police will seek their custody for further interrogation," a senior Kolkata Police officer said.

The incident left local residents shocked and angry. As news of the alleged assault and public humiliation spread, a crowd gathered and vandalised the woman's house, reports said.
