Roy was already in judicial custody after being arrested on September 10 this year by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police in connection with a multi-crore illegal land-grabbing case at Salboni in West Midnapore district. He was shown as arrested on October 28 by Diamond Harbour Police in the soil theft case, and was produced before the court on Saturday, where the judge remanded him to 10 days of police custody at the end of the hearing.

The soil theft case was registered at Kalitala-Ashuti Police Station under the Diamond Harbour police district, where Roy has been accused of involvement in soil theft to the tune of Rs 400 crore — an allegation that remains under investigation and has not been adjudicated. A Diamond Harbour police district official said there was a necessity for sustained questioning of Roy in the case to learn about other, more influential beneficiaries in the alleged scam, and that investigators were now trying to establish how deep-rooted the alleged corruption cycle is and what the sources of the financial transactions in the matter are.

In the separate Salboni illegal land-grabbing case, police first arrested former Trinamool Congress legislator Sujay Hazra. During the investigation of Hazra, Roy's name surfaced in connection with the case, following which he was arrested by CID sleuths on September 10 after being questioned a number of times. In its chargesheet in that matter, the CID gave details of how money in the Salboni case allegedly reached Roy's office.
