The SIT will be headed by Ankur Jain, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati. Its members include Shambhavi Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central); Dr Debajit Nath, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime); Viku Achumi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central); Inspector Kuleshjyoti Bhuyan, Officer-in-Charge of Paltan Bazar Police Station; and Sub-Inspector Abinash Das of the same police station.
According to police, Paltan Bazar Police Station received information about multiple gunshots at around 9 pm on October 26. Teams reached the hotel and found four people dead inside the reception area, while two others were injured on the approach road. The injured were shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where one of them later succumbed to his injuries; one person remains under treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Bhudev Bharali, 65, of Barpeta; Helena Bharali, 58; Debarshi Kashyap, 39; and Rinika Kashyap, 30, all residents of Nabin Nagar in Guwahati; and Narayan Das, 48, of Barpeta. The injured person is Satyendra Pathak, 43, of Barpeta, who is undergoing treatment at GMCH, police said.
Police said the accused, Ghanakanta Gogoi, 34, originally from Dibrugarh and currently residing in the Sawkuchi area of Guwahati, was taken into custody and the pistol allegedly used in the incident has been seized. Preliminary investigation, according to police, indicates the shooting followed a dispute over the lease and management of the hotel — that account remains a preliminary police indication, not a concluded finding.
A video of the shooting has also emerged showing a man firing at point-blank range, the Daily Jagran reported, identifying the man shot in the video as the survivor, Satyendra Pathak. The SIT will examine forensic evidence, witness statements and the circumstances leading to the firing, reports said.
