South-East District Deputy Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar said the incident took place at around 10:15 pm on October 30, when Sagheer Ali, a resident of Seelampur, was passing through the Iqra Mosque turn in Pocket-11, Jasola. Four assailants allegedly surrounded him, attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon and fled with his bag containing the cash, police said.

According to police, Ali supplied raw material used in broom manufacturing in Jasola village and visited the area every Friday to collect payments. Investigators allege that Shahnaz and Azad passed information about his routine and cash collections to their associates, who allegedly kept watch on him before carrying out the robbery. The allegations are part of the police investigation and have not been proved in court.

Police said the case was cracked using CCTV footage and technical investigation. The arrested accused have been identified by police as Sahil alias Lalla, Yaseen, Azad, Kaifi and Sahil, and a minor allegedly associated with the group has also been apprehended. The minor has not been named, in line with the law on juvenile accused.

Police said Rs 1,72,200 of the looted amount and the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime have been recovered. The investigation has so far indicated the involvement of eight people, police said, and two suspects — Sheikh Sameer and Sajid alias Syed — are still absconding.
