Remanded in custody; judge warns of prison sentence

Mr Justice Bennathan told Brand that, given the rape conviction, a custodial sentence of some length would follow, and Brand was remanded in custody ahead of a sentencing hearing on Monday, November 9, Hello Magazine and the Christian Post reported.

Following the verdict, David Roberts, senior Crown Prosecutor in the London Rape and Serious Sexual Assault Unit, said in a statement that Brand "was predatory and used his celebrity status to commit sexual crimes" and that at the centre of every assault was "an abuse of power and sexual greed, with a complete disregard for the impact of his actions." He thanked the women in the case for their courage in coming forward. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police paid tribute to the detectives and specialist staff on the investigation and urged anyone who may have been a victim of rape or serious sexual assault to speak to police.

Investigation, charges — and Brand's denial

Metropolitan Police detectives began investigating Brand in 2023 after allegations against him were reported by multiple UK news outlets, the police said. He was first charged in April 2025, and in December 2025 the Crown Prosecution Service authorised further charges concerning two additional women, bringing the total to seven charges. Brand responded to the initial charges on social media in April 2025, saying: "What I never was, was a rapist. I've never engaged in nonconsensual activity." He maintained that position through the trial. ABC News said it had reached out to Brand's attorney for comment after the verdict.

What is solid

  • A Southwark Crown Court jury on Thursday, Nov 5 convicted Russell Brand of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault and acquitted him of two rape counts and one attempted indecent assault count, after a trial on seven charges involving six women and alleged incidents from 1999 to 2009 (Associated Press, TYLA, Hello Magazine and Christian Post all reporting the same verdicts)
  • Brand was remanded in custody, sentencing is set for Monday, Nov 9, and the judge warned a custodial sentence will follow (Hello Magazine, Christian Post)

What is only claimed

  • Reports differ on the jury's exact deliberation time: the Associated Press said more than eight hours, while some outlets gave figures from about six hours to nine hours and 13 minutes — the precise total has not been stated in a single official release
  • One outlet (Female First) reported that the Metropolitan Police said Brand is under further investigation over other allegations by two women; that point did not appear in the police and prosecution statements carried by the Associated Press report and Awaaz Punjab has not independently confirmed it
What happens next

Brand remains in custody and returns to Southwark Crown Court on Monday, November 9 for sentencing. Awaaz Punjab will report the sentence when it is handed down.
