A Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) airstrike struck a neighbourhood in the Um Badr area of North Kordofan state on Wednesday (November 4), killing two women and injuring 10 other people, the Sudan Tribune reported. The same wave of airstrikes hit the Al-Kabjark water station at Khor Dardaq, destroying the tanks, pumps and solar panels at a facility residents rely on for water. The Europe External Programme with Africa (EEPA), in its situation report on Sudan dated November 5, likewise recorded that two people were killed and 10 more injured in an SAF airstrike on a water source in the Um Badr area of North Kordofan state on November 4. Neither report carried a comment from the SAF on the strike.

The Um Badr strike is the second reported attack on civilian supply infrastructure in the Kordofans this week, days after a drone strike on a fuel station in Abbasiya, South Kordofan, killed at least 16 civilians queuing for fuel, according to local sources. A water station destroyed as the Kordofan front widens

Water infrastructure has become a repeated casualty of Sudan's war: the destruction of the Al-Kabjark station's tanks, pumps and solar panels removes a vital water supply for an area already strained by displacement, and comes as UN officials have condemned a wider pattern of drone and air attacks on power and water facilities across northern and central Sudan in recent days. The Um Badr strike landed within a week of heavy fighting across the Kordofan region, where the SAF has announced it is advancing towards Darfur and Kordofan to fight the RSF: Brigadier General Haroun Mersal, a senior commander of the Sudan's Joint Force, an SAF-allied force, was killed on November 3 in the Kordofan region after renewed clashes with the RSF, the EEPA report said, while the RSF launched a drone attack on Ed Damazin, the capital of Blue Nile region, between November 3 and 4, targeting military infrastructure and civilian properties.

Detentions in Darfur, disease warnings and doubling bread prices

The same EEPA report described a humanitarian situation deteriorating on several fronts at once: dozens of professionals, including medical personnel and professors, have been detained by the RSF across several facilities in El Geneina, West Darfur, according to the Sudan Doctors Network; thousands of unvaccinated children in Darfur are contracting preventable diseases such as measles and whooping cough, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned; and bread prices in Khartoum have doubled in a week amid rising wheat and fuel costs, flour shortages and a weakening Sudanese pound. Sudan's war between the SAF and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has driven one of the world's largest displacement crises, and aid agencies say attacks on the power and water systems civilians depend on are deepening it. What happens next turns on the Kordofan offensive: the army's push through North Kordofan towards Darfur has brought daily strikes on towns along the route, and each attack on a water or fuel point raises the cost of survival for the civilians who remain.
