Rescue teams on Thursday recovered the bodies of five more people from beneath the debris at Gidipabali village in Odisha's Ganjam district, raising the death toll in the landslide to seven, IANS reported. The five were members of a single family and were identified by their relatives, officials said. Awaaz Punjab is not naming the three children among them.

This is a follow-up to the landslide that struck the hill village on October 28, when exceptional rainfall triggered by Cyclone Arnab sent mud and boulders down on homes in Gidipabali, under Baibali Panchayat in Bhanjanagar block near the Ganjam-Kandhamal border. Around 13 people were reported missing at the time, and Awaaz Punjab reported the rescue operation on October 31, when two bodies had been recovered.

With Thursday's recoveries, seven of the 13 missing have now been found dead and six people remain unaccounted for, according to the district administration figures reported by Sambad English. Teams of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), Fire Services, the Disaster Victim Identification unit and the Special Casualty Unit remain deployed at the site.

The search has been slow and dangerous work: the village sits on a hilltop with poor road access, and the operation was halted on November 4 over safety concerns and the risk of fresh slides in continuing rain, the Dinalipi reported, citing Collector V. Keerthi Vasan. The administration has said the search will continue in the coming days until the remaining six missing are traced.

The wider storm toll

Gidipabali was one of around 10 landslides reported across Odisha during Cyclone Arnab's rains. Survivors from the village have been sheltered at a primary school in neighbouring Kandhamal district.
