A 38-year-old man from Bermuda Dunes is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder after Palm Springs police arrested him on Wednesday afternoon in La Quinta in connection with a weekend stabbing in downtown Palm Springs, the Palm Springs Police Department said. The suspect, identified by police as Francisco Elias, was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.

According to investigators, the violence began with a fight inside The Village area of downtown Palm Springs, the city's bar and restaurant district. Around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, a second fight broke out at the nearby parking structure on South Indian Canyon Drive, and police allege that Elias pulled out a knife during that confrontation, stabbed the victim in the neck and upper body, and then fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz. The stabbing is an allegation at this stage: Elias has been arrested on suspicion, not convicted, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The victim was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs in critical but stable condition. Police said he has since been released from the hospital. Officers have not released the victim's name or age, and they have not said what started the first fight inside The Village or whether the two men knew each other before that night.

Police are still asking for witnesses

Anyone with information about the Sunday-morning fight or the stabbing is asked to contact Palm Springs Police Detective Barragan at (760) 323-8157. The investigation is continuing, and police have not said whether anyone else is being sought.

Four days from stabbing to arrest

Emergency dispatch records from the night itself match the location police later described: in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, fire and medical crews were called to the downtown parking structure on South Indian Canyon Drive, between Osterina Road and East Bursell Road, for a reported stabbing victim, and police were requested to the area. Detectives then spent the following days on the case before the Wednesday-afternoon arrest in La Quinta, a neighbouring Coachella Valley city roughly a half-hour's drive from the stabbing scene. Police have not described what evidence led them to Elias, or where exactly in La Quinta he was taken into custody.

Where the case goes now

Elias was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center, Riverside County's main jail in Indio, on suspicion of attempted murder. In the standard California process, the Riverside County District Attorney's Office will now review the police file and decide what formal charges, if any, to file, and Elias will be brought before a judge for arraignment. Police have announced no court date yet, and no bail information has been released in the reports so far.

Downtown Palm Springs draws heavy weekend crowds to The Village and the South Indian Canyon Drive corridor, and a stabbing in a public parking structure at closing time is the kind of incident local businesses and residents watch closely. For now, the confirmed outline is narrow and specific: two fights, one stabbing at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a victim who survived and has left hospital, and an arrest four days later in a neighbouring city. What started the fights, and what evidence connects the arrested man to the knife, are questions police have not yet answered publicly.
