Russia's military struck an energy storage battery facility in Ukraine's Kyiv region and a cargo vessel in the Black Sea port of Odesa, the Russian defence ministry said on Telegram on Friday, according to Reuters. The ministry said both targets were used for military purposes — a claim Ukraine had not confirmed in the reports available as this story was filed.

The ministry said Russian forces carried out overnight drone attacks targeting energy facilities and naval vessels in regions including Kyiv and Odesa, AzerNews reported. "As a result of strikes in the Kyiv region ... a battery storage facility that supplied electricity to Ukrainian military-industrial complex facilities was damaged," the ministry wrote on Telegram, adding that "a dry cargo ship was hit in the port of Odessa, which was delivering dual-use cargo to Ukraine."

What Moscow says was hit

AzerNews also reported, citing RIA Novosti, that the Russian Aerospace Forces had launched a separate FAB bomb strike that Moscow said destroyed an electrical substation near Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine. No details regarding casualties or the extent of the infrastructure damage from the overnight attacks have been officially confirmed so far, the report said.

The vessel struck in Odesa was not named in the Russian statement, and no flag, crew information or damage assessment for the ship was given in the reports reviewed. Ukrainian officials had not published a confirmation of the Kyiv-region or Odesa damage in those reports, so the scale of the strikes — and whether the cargo vessel was carrying military cargo, as Moscow alleges — remains unverified.

Strikes land days before the Abu Dhabi talks

The attacks come four days before delegations from Ukraine and Russia are due to meet in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11 for US-mediated talks — the first trilateral round since February — on ending the war, post-war security agreements, de-escalation and humanitarian measures. US President Donald Trump said on Thursday, after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House, that a deal to end the war was "very close" and might involve all of Europe, while giving no terms.

Fighting on the ground continued alongside the overnight strikes. Ukrainian reporting carried by the h.ua news aggregator said Russian forces carried out 785 strikes across 51 settlements in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region over the preceding day, with 42 reports of damage to homes and infrastructure received and no casualties reported from that day's attacks — figures Awaaz Punjab has not independently verified.

What is solid

  • Russia's defence ministry announced the Kyiv-region battery facility and Odesa cargo vessel strikes on Telegram on Friday, and Reuters reported the statement.
  • No casualty figures or confirmed damage assessments for these specific strikes had been published in the reports reviewed.
  • US-mediated Ukraine-Russia talks are scheduled in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11.

What is only claimed

  • Moscow's claim that both targets were used for military purposes, and that the Odesa vessel was delivering dual-use cargo.
  • The extent of damage to the battery facility, the Sumy substation and the vessel, none of which has been independently confirmed.

What happens next: attention turns to whether Ukraine publishes its own damage assessment, and to the Abu Dhabi round on November 10-11, where negotiators will test whether the diplomatic momentum described by Washington survives another week of strikes on the energy grid and the Black Sea ports.
