Russia's military said on Thursday that it hit logistics and transport targets in various regions of Ukraine overnight, in a statement reported by Reuters on November 5 that listed a postal logistics hub, railway locomotives, power facilities and a cargo vessel at sea among the targets struck.

In Ukraine's Kharkiv region, a Nova Poshta logistics hub was struck, as well as railway locomotives and an industrial building at Thermal Power Plant 2, the Russian Defence Ministry said. Nova Poshta is Ukraine's largest private parcel carrier, and its hubs handle civilian deliveries across the country as well as parcels sent to and from soldiers at the front.

The ministry said the logistics hub was used by the Ukrainian military to assemble drones. That is Moscow's stated justification for the strike, reported here as the ministry's claim: Reuters said it could not independently verify the battlefield reports, and the ministry offered no evidence for the drone-assembly claim in the statement Reuters carried.

In Dnipropetrovsk region, a power station was hit, and a cargo vessel at sea 52 kilometres (about 32 miles) southwest of the Black Sea port of Odesa was attacked, the ministry said. The statement did not name the vessel, its flag or its cargo, and gave no casualty figures for any of the overnight strikes.

The overnight claims follow the pattern Awaaz Punjab reported a night earlier, when Russia and Ukraine traded drone strikes that injured five people and started fires in Dnipro and at industrial sites in Ryazan. Read: Russia and Ukraine trade overnight drone strikes

Why logistics and power are the target set

The target list — parcel logistics, rail traction, a thermal power plant building and a power station — matches the campaign Ukraine's leadership described in Madrid on Thursday: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told the Ibero-American Summit that Russian missile and drone attacks had damaged every power plant in Ukraine and appealed for transformers, cables and generators before winter. A hit on a power station in Dnipropetrovsk region, if confirmed, lands on the same grid Kyiv is asking the world to help repair.

The same week brought one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year: the death toll from Monday's bombing of an aid distribution point at Komyshuvakha rose to 42 on Thursday, with up to 33 people still buried, Zaporizhzhia police said — a toll Russia's Defence Ministry disputes, saying it targeted military units. The Odesa element matters beyond Ukraine: the port is the hinge of Ukraine's Black Sea grain and cargo trade, and an attack on a vessel 52 kilometres offshore — again, as the ministry described it — is the kind of claim that raises insurance and routing costs for every shipper using the corridor, including the Indian and Punjabi seafarers who crew a large share of the world's merchant fleet.

What is solid

  • Russia's Defence Ministry said on Thursday its forces hit logistics and transport targets across Ukraine overnight, listing a Nova Poshta hub, railway locomotives and a Thermal Power Plant 2 industrial building in Kharkiv region, a power station in Dnipropetrovsk region and a cargo vessel 52 km southwest of Odesa (Reuters, Nov 5)
  • Reuters stated it could not independently verify the battlefield reports (Reuters, Nov 5)
  • Zelenskiy told the Madrid summit the same day that Russian attacks had damaged every power plant in Ukraine, as he appealed for transformers, cables and generators (Reuters, Nov 5)

What is only claimed

  • The ministry's claim that the Nova Poshta hub was used by Ukraine's military to assemble drones is Moscow's justification, carried without supporting evidence in the statement; Nova Poshta is a civilian parcel carrier and Kyiv has not confirmed any military use of the hub
  • No Ukrainian official confirmation or casualty figures for these specific overnight strikes accompanied the ministry's account — casualty claims circulating online for a Kharkiv postal terminal match a 2023 strike and are not evidence for this one
  • The identity, flag, cargo and condition of the vessel said to have been attacked off Odesa were not given

What happens next

Ukrainian regional authorities and Nova Poshta itself usually confirm or dispute strikes on their facilities within hours, and their accounts — with any casualty figures — will decide how much of the ministry's list stands. The strikes land five days before the first Ukraine-Russia-US talks since February, due in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, and in the same week Turkey's President Erdogan said he wants talks with Russia's President Putin on ending the war — diplomacy moving in public while the overnight target lists keep lengthening in private.
