Russia and Ukraine exchanged overnight strikes into Thursday, injuring five people, according to officials on both sides — another night of drone warfare over cities and energy sites, less than a week before the United States is due to bring the two sides' delegations together in Abu Dhabi for talks on ending the war, now in its fifth year.

In Ukraine's Dnipro, a Russian drone attack injured three people after hitting a private house and garages, regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said on Telegram on Thursday, and a critical infrastructure facility also caught fire. Reuters could not independently confirm the report, and noted that Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians.

The Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration said the three injured were in the cities of Dnipro and Samar, where the attack damaged private homes and sparked fires at critical infrastructure facilities. In the Kyiv region, one more person was injured in a Russian attack on logistics infrastructure that set the facility ablaze, Ukraine's emergency service said on Telegram.

The Ryazan side: refinery fire reported

In Russia's Ryazan region, one person was injured in what Governor Pavel Malkov called a 'massive' drone attack. Falling debris sparked fires at industrial sites in Ryazan, power lines were damaged and electricity supplies were disrupted in parts of the city, windows were shattered at a school and classes were cancelled, Malkov said on Telegram. Private homes were damaged in the Ryazan district, and a nonresidential building caught fire in a residential area of the Rybnovsky district, he added.

Ukrainian reporting said the Ryazan targets included the Rosneft-operated oil refinery — one of Russia's largest oil-processing plants — and a Wildberries logistics centre, where fires broke out. The Kyiv Post reported fires at both facilities and power outages in parts of Ryazan. Those target claims come from Ukrainian sources and have not been independently verified; the Russian governor's own account spoke of fires at industrial sites without naming the refinery.

What is solid

  • Officials on BOTH sides reported overnight strikes, fires and a total of five injured — three in Dnipro and Samar, one in the Kyiv region and one in Ryazan (regional officials, via Reuters and BytesEU)
  • Ukraine's emergency service and the Dnipropetrovsk administration reported fires at homes, garages and infrastructure in Dnipro (Reuters)

What is only claimed

  • The drone counts are each side's own claims — Ukraine's General Staff said Russia launched 2 missiles and 128 drones (105 downed); Russia's Defence Ministry claimed 496 Ukrainian drones intercepted — neither figure is independently verified
  • Ukrainian reports that the Ryazan oil refinery and a Wildberries hub were hit are not confirmed by Russia's governor, who mentioned industrial-site fires without naming facilities

Strikes on the eve of talks

The exchange came a day after Ukraine's Energy Ministry said nuclear power plants had been forced to cut generation because Russian attacks on substations limit electricity distribution, with the Kyiv region worst affected — a reminder that the air war is aimed heavily at the power grid as winter approaches. US special envoy Steve Witkoff has said delegations from Ukraine and Russia will meet in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11 to discuss post-war security agreements, de-escalation, humanitarian measures and ending the war. Neither side showed any pause in strikes ahead of those talks.
