External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Guyanese President Dr Irfaan Ali on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 in St John's, Antigua and Barbuda, on Thursday, where India announced the extension of a $500 million line of credit to Guyana, IANS reported.

The credit line is meant for roads, health and defence projects in the South American nation, according to the announcement made after the meeting.

Three agreements signed

The two sides also signed agreements on the supply and installation of MSE manufacturing projects, grant assistance for the implementation of Quick Impact Projects, and cooperation in digital public infrastructure, including the functioning of a UPI-like payment system in Guyana.

In a post on X after the meeting, Jaishankar said he was delighted to meet President Ali and that the two reviewed the steady progress in bilateral cooperation, especially after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Guyana in 2024. He listed the credit-line extension and the signed agreements in the same post.

Why it matters

The digital agreement takes India's home-grown payments model — built around the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at home — into the Caribbean, while the credit line continues India's practice of funding roads, health and defence infrastructure in partner countries. No project list or disbursement timeline was announced with the package.

The meeting adds a Guyana chapter to India's engagements at the Antigua Commonwealth summit, where the External Affairs Minister has been holding a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of partner countries.
