From 'one missing' to a confirmed death

In the first reports, the contractor's area manager Kamal Phukan told ANI that five workers were in Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), one was in the Oil India hospital and one worker had not yet been found, and that he had no information about any death. Eastern Lens had named the missing worker as Raju Dutta and reported one person killed, while saying the identity of the deceased was yet to be confirmed. Oil India's later statement, carried by PTI and updated at 1.31 p.m. on Friday, confirms both the death and Dutta's identity. Dainik Asam, Assam's Assamese daily, also reported one dead in the fire at the ITF in Tengakhat.

The five injured workers admitted to AMCH were named in the earlier reports as Tapas Gogoi (40), a resident of Milan Nagar in Dibrugarh; Shailen Gogoi (45); Kumud Gogoi (38); Golap Dutta (58); and Indra Gogoi (40) — the last four residents of Tengakhat. Oil India now puts the total number of injured at six, which matches the earlier count of five workers at AMCH plus one at the OIL Hospital.

Fire brought under control

Oil India said its fire service personnel were immediately mobilised and the blaze has been brought under control. At the time Eastern Lens filed its first report, the blaze had not yet been brought under control; Oil India's statement is the later position.

Preliminary reports had suggested the explosion took place in the crude oil storage section of the Oil Collecting Station inside the ITF premises while a valve was being operated during technical work; the exact cause has not yet been officially established. What happens next is the treatment of the six injured workers and an inquiry into what caused the fire.
