Indian equity benchmarks closed sharply higher on Friday, November 6, extending their winning run to a seventh straight session despite a severe overnight sell-off in global markets. The BSE Sensex settled 1,718.01 points, or 2.17 per cent, higher at 81,028.02, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 493.75 points, or 2.01 per cent, to close at 25,030.35, The Hindu BusinessLine reported in its closing-bell update.

The close capped a powerful week on Dalal Street. Over the week, the Sensex zoomed close to 9 per cent and the Nifty close to 8 per cent, The Hindu BusinessLine said, while ANI described the Dhanteras session as a bonanza for investors, with the Sensex surging over 1,700 points and the Nifty closing above 25,000 against the previous close of 79,310.01 and 24,536.60 respectively.

The rally built on the morning's recovery, when the indices had opened almost flat and then climbed back above 24,600 on the Nifty as IT stocks defied the global rout. By 3 pm on Friday the Sensex had zoomed 1,309.41 points to 80,619.42 before a final push took it to its closing high; the index crossed the 80,000 mark in intraday trade for the first time since March 5, 2026.

The gains came even as Wall Street suffered a steep fall overnight, with the Nasdaq tumbling 5.52 per cent, the S&P 500 falling 4.36 per cent and the Dow Jones dropping 3.45 per cent amid a broad unwinding of artificial-intelligence and semiconductor trades, The Hindu BusinessLine reported. Bloomberg, cited by the paper, said Indian stocks were on track for their strongest weekly performance in more than five years, supported by overseas inflows and a recovery in earnings growth.
