What happens next

According to the PPCB, the total area under paddy cultivation in Punjab spans 32.87 lakh hectares, and as of November 5 harvesting had been completed across 87.60 per cent of this area — up from 85.10 per cent a day earlier. With the remaining crop still to be cleared, the PPCB's next daily reports will show whether the season total rises further in the final stretch of harvesting, and whether the FIRs, fines and red entries slow the fires.
