Fourth fatal collapse in about two months

The collapse came amid the festive-season rush in one of the capital's busiest wholesale market areas. It is the fourth fatal building collapse in Delhi in about two months. On September 6, a building housing a paying-guest accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan, killing seven people. On October 7, a portion of a multi-storey building gave way in Seemapuri, killing four people, and on October 25 an under-construction structure collapsed in Milan Garden, Harsh Vihar, killing a 60-year-old man, Chanderpal, and his 33-year-old son, Vijay Kumar.

After the Satya Niketan tragedy, the Supreme Court directed authorities across the country to file affidavits on the steps taken to comply with its earlier directions on unauthorised constructions. The Delhi government also acted against Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials, suspending five officers and ordering a drive against buildings with unauthorised fifth floors. Further details on Thursday's collapse were awaited as rescue work continued.
