Chief minister seeks report; hospital emergency declared

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over the deaths, sought a report on the collision and directed the district administration to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured, the Express Tribune reported. On her instructions, Pakpattan Deputy Commissioner Asif Raza went to the hospital, declared an emergency at the District Headquarters Hospital and called in additional doctors and medical staff, Pakistan Today reported. President Asif Ali Zardari and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also expressed condolences and prayed for the recovery of the injured, the Express Tribune reported.

One crash in a deadly provincial toll

The crash is the second in just over two weeks to kill 10 or more people on a road in Pakistan's Punjab, KhabarWire reported. Rescue 1122 recorded 44,797 road accidents across the province in October alone, with 464 people killed and 23,543 seriously injured, the Express Tribune reported, citing the emergency service's data; motorcycles were involved in nearly one-third of the crashes, and Lahore recorded the highest number with 7,874 incidents. The Express Tribune, citing road-safety experts, attributes the provincial toll in general to rash driving, rising vehicle ownership and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure — general explanations, not findings about Thursday's collision.

What is solid

  • A bus and a truck collided on Depalpur Road near 17 SP Stop, Pakpattan, on Thursday, Nov 5; Rescue 1122 put the toll at 11 killed and 33 injured (Express Tribune, Pakistan Today, Independent Pakistan and Burak Digital all reporting the same toll and location)
  • Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz sought a report and ordered the best treatment for the injured, and an emergency was declared at the District Headquarters Hospital in Pakpattan (Express Tribune, Pakistan Today, Burak Digital)

What is only claimed

  • The two main accounts differ on one of the dead: Pakistan Today described one of those killed as a Rescue 1122 official, while the Express Tribune named him as patrolling police officer Ali Hasnain and identified the second uniformed victim as Zahid Imam of the Para Force; the Express Tribune account is the more specific of the two
  • One account (Burak Digital) described the bus as travelling from Multan to Lahore and the other vehicle as a potato-laden trailer; the Express Tribune and Pakistan Today account, followed here, has the bus travelling from Multan to Kasur and meeting a truck head-on
  • No cause has been established: neither Rescue 1122 nor the district administration has said whether speed, overtaking, fatigue, a mechanical fault or road conditions contributed, and no FIR or investigation findings have been released
What happens next

The injured are being treated at the District Headquarters Hospital and nearby facilities and officials say the toll may rise. A cause and any investigation findings are still awaited; Awaaz Punjab will update this story when Rescue 1122 or the district administration releases them.
