SACRAMENTO COUNTY, California — A red big rig overturned onto its side and roof on northbound State Route 99 at the Grant Line Road east on-ramp on Thursday afternoon, November 5, in a crash with two sedans that the California Highway Patrol's incident log records as a fatality. The first log entry, at 1:31 p.m. Pacific time, reported a big rig against two four-door sedans — one red, one grey or silver — with all northbound lanes blocked at the scene, just south of Elk Grove in southern Sacramento County.

Within two minutes, officers at the scene were reporting the big rig on its side, then overturned on its roof and on the driver's side, leaking oil or fluid. Lanes 1 and 3 were blocked, then every northbound lane. A heavy-duty tow was requested at 1:37 p.m., the fire department arrived by 1:48 p.m., and the log notes two dogs involved in the crash — a small dog was later located at an off-ramp, and the fire department arranged to drop it at a shelter, at 2:18 p.m.

All lanes blocked: the SigAlert and the Caltrans hard closure

At 2:00 p.m. the CHP issued a SigAlert: 'Northbound 99 just south of Eschinger Road, all lanes are blocked due to a traffic collision. There is no estimated time of reopening.' Caltrans crews set up a hard closure, diverting northbound traffic at the Dillard Road off-ramp and closing the Dillard on-ramp to northbound 99, while tow trucks that were themselves stuck in the backup at Dillard Road were given wrong-way access at Grant Line to reach the wreck. Some drivers were reported trying to drive the wrong way down the shoulder at 1:46 p.m.

The big rig was recorded with major damage — both rear axles still attached but the front axle 'bad order' (not functioning) — and officers ordered evidence tows for all three vehicles. Central Valley Towing took all three vehicles for evidence to a yard on 14th Avenue, an officer following them at 4:32 p.m. The incident was also logged with the state Office of Emergency Services under control number 26-5742, and the Sacramento Fire Department's involvement was logged as run number 659.

What investigators have not said

The CHP log does not state what caused the collision, does not name anyone involved, and does not give a confirmed count of the dead or injured beyond the incident's fatal classification; a secondary summary of the CHP information reported major injuries. The identity of anyone killed is a matter for the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, which had released no name in the sources available for this report. No charges or citations appear in the log.

Why Highway 99 matters to this readership

State Route 99 is the Central Valley's main north–south freight spine, running through Fresno, Modesto, Stockton and Sacramento, and it carries a heavy share of the truck traffic worked by California's large Punjabi trucking community. A full closure south of Elk Grove pushes freight and commuter traffic onto Interstate 5 and surface roads around Galt and Elk Grove, and Thursday's closure lasted through the start of the evening commute: the log records crews opening the center divide at about 4:12 p.m., one lane of traffic moving through the divide at 4:34 p.m., and 'roadway open' at 4:45 p.m.

What happens next

The CHP's South Sacramento-area officers are investigating the cause of the crash; a full collision report will follow through the CHP crash-report process. Anyone who witnessed the collision can contact the California Highway Patrol's Sacramento communications centre. Drivers using SR-99 should check Caltrans QuickMap or the CHP traffic feed before travelling, as investigation and cleanup work can bring back lane restrictions.

Awaaz Punjab will update this story when the coroner's office releases an identity or the CHP publishes its findings on how the big rig and the two sedans collided.
