SAN DIEGO, California — Two men were arrested on Wednesday, November 4, after San Diego police searched a home in the Ocean Beach neighbourhood and found a bag of psilocybin gummies identical to packages that, according to the San Diego Police Department, were left on the home's porch on Halloween night and taken by at least 15 trick-or-treating children aged between 1 and 6 years old in the Sunset Cliffs area.

Michael Goff, 80, and Shawn Michael Foster, 45, were booked into San Diego County Jail. Police said Goff was booked on suspicion of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, while Foster faces suspicion of possessing both a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. The arrests announced so far are on those firearm suspicions; police describe the two men as suspected of distributing the gummies, and the narcotics and child-endangerment investigation is continuing. Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Halloween night: parents spot the packages
According to the San Diego Police Department account carried by City News Service, multiple bags of psilocybin-infused gummies were left on a residence's porch on Saturday night — Halloween — and were later taken by young children trick-or-treating in Sunset Cliffs. The children's parents noticed the suspicious candy packages and, on inspecting them, suspected they contained controlled substances. Local television reporting described the packages as labelled with a five-gram psilocybin quantity, in colourful pouches that looked like ordinary candy.
The parents confronted the homeowners and later filed a police report, saving the packages of gummies for law-enforcement evaluation. According to the City News Service report, the saved packages later tested positive for psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in psychedelic mushrooms. The reports published by Thursday did not say that any child had eaten the gummies or been harmed; the alarm was raised when parents inspected the Halloween haul.
The Wednesday search on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard
Officers responded on Wednesday morning to the 2100 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, where they served a search warrant; ABC 10News reporting put the search at around 11 a.m. During the search, officers discovered an identical bag of psilocybin gummies to those distributed on Halloween inside the home, police said.
Detectives seized more than 2.5 pounds of cannabis, more than 25 grams of crystal methamphetamine, a working digital scale, packaging materials and drug sales ledgers. An illegally possessed rifle was also located at the residence, along with dozens of rounds of unfired ammunition and a partially assembled pistol, according to the police account. A San Diego code compliance investigator also responded to the scene to begin a separate investigation into the property's unpermitted living structures.

Police searched the home as part of an ongoing narcotics and child-endangerment investigation, but the bookings announced on Wednesday were for alleged felon-in-possession offences — a rifle, a partially assembled pistol and ammunition found in a home where, police say, the occupants included convicted felons who are barred from having them. Whether distribution or child-endangerment charges follow depends on the continuing investigation and laboratory work; earlier in the case, San Diego police Lt. Cesar Jimenez had cautioned that testing would be needed to confirm what the gummies contained before charges could be considered.
Why it matters locally: Ocean Beach and Sunset Cliffs are dense, family-heavy beach neighbourhoods where Halloween trick-or-treating runs porch to porch, and the case has become a pointed warning for parents across San Diego County — including its Punjabi and Indian families — to inspect every package in a child's Halloween haul before anything is eaten. It also shows how a single porch bowl, left out on one street, can pull a whole block into a narcotics investigation within four days.
What happens next: Goff and Foster remain booked into San Diego County Jail on the firearm suspicions announced Wednesday, and the San Diego Police Department says its narcotics and child-endangerment investigation is ongoing, which could bring further charges. Anyone with information about the case was urged to contact the department's Narcotics Unit at 619-531-2468, or to remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
