Kolkata: West Bengal has allowed 337 B.Ed colleges to begin admissions for the 2026-28 academic session after a second round of government inspections, while 205 colleges that still failed to meet the prescribed standards have been given until the end of December 2026 to improve, Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay said while sharing details of the inspection exercise on Wednesday, November 5. The government does not intend to de-affiliate the 205 colleges at this stage, but they must upgrade infrastructure, faculty strength, student facilities and teaching-learning standards.

In the first phase of inspections, 156 B.Ed colleges were permitted to admit students, while 451 colleges failed to meet the standards and were given 21 days to improve; nine of them did not return for the second inspection. The colleges that returned were inspected again, and 337 were found to have met the required standards and were allowed to begin admissions from November 4. Separately, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University (BSAEU) has published its affiliation-renewal lists naming 205 colleges as non-eligible for the 2026-28 session, which are not allowed to admit B.Ed students until they fix their deficiencies.

The drive, run by the Higher Education Department and the Technical Education Department, also covered industrial training institutes (ITIs), polytechnic institutions and pharmacy colleges offering DPharm and BPharm courses. Of the 265 ITIs inspected, 14 were de-affiliated because they did not have basic infrastructure, the minister said. Of 134 pharmacy colleges, 38 have been directed not to admit students during the current academic year.

Students planning a B.Ed seat for the 2026-28 session should check their college against BSAEU's eligible and non-eligible lists before taking admission, since a college on the non-eligible list cannot admit students until it becomes eligible again. The 205 colleges have been told to overcome their deficiencies immediately and may become eligible for the next session if they meet the standards.
