Gujarat Energy Ltd (GEL) has signed a long-term sale and purchase agreement with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to procure up to 4 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over ten years, with supplies scheduled to begin in 2028, the companies announced on Friday. The Hindu BusinessLine reported that, according to GEL's stock exchange disclosure, pricing under the contract is linked to the Henry Hub index.

The LNG will be sourced from the international gas portfolio of XRG, ADNOC's international investment company. The agreement marks the first procurement of LNG molecules from XRG's international portfolio and is ADNOC's fifth LNG supply agreement in India, the company said in its statement. Spread evenly, the contracted volume works out to an average of up to 400,000 tonnes a year, although actual offtake will depend on the contractual arrangements.

Rashid Al Mazrouei, ADNOC's Chief Marketing and Origination Officer for LNG, said the agreement strengthened the company's long-standing energy partnership with India. Gujarat Energy's managing director said the company's city gas distribution network operates across 44 districts in six states. The contract adds a long-term imported supply line for that network from 2028. India's LNG imports were estimated at 36.7 billion cubic metres in fiscal 2024-25, up 15.4 per cent from 31.8 billion cubic metres the previous year, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and an official of the ministry estimated in an interview with The National on November 5 that the UAE supplies about 10 per cent of India's LNG imports.
