The Indian Navy on Thursday, November 5, received Amini, the fifth of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), the Ministry of Defence said. The vessel was delivered at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu and formally accepted by Rear Admiral Gautam Marwaha, Chief Staff Officer (Technical) at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters.

Amini is the 119th warship built by GRSE and the 81st warship the Kolkata shipyard has delivered to the Indian Navy, India Seatrade News reported, citing the shipyard. It is also the fourth warship GRSE has delivered in 2026, after the yard handed over three frontline platforms — Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray — on a single day on March 30.

Built for coastal anti-submarine operations

Designed and built to the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping, Amini is about 77.6 metres long and is propelled by marine diesel engines coupled with waterjets, making it among the largest Indian naval warships to use waterjet propulsion, Bharat Shakti reported. The ship carries more than 80 per cent indigenous content, the Defence Ministry said.

The craft is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous anti-submarine rocket launchers, sonars and an advanced combat management system. It is designed for sub-surface surveillance, search-and-attack missions and coordinated anti-submarine operations alongside naval aircraft in shallow coastal waters, where larger warships face constraints.

A Lakshadweep name returns to the fleet

The ship is named after Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and revives the name of the earlier INS Amini, a Petya III-class anti-submarine corvette that was decommissioned in 2002. The ASW-SWC series is replacing the Navy's ageing Abhay-class corvettes for coastal defence.

Delivery is the point at which the builder hands a ship over after trials; a formal commissioning ceremony, at which the Navy inducts the vessel into service under a commanding officer, follows later. The Defence Ministry has not announced a commissioning date for Amini, and no date has been announced for the remaining three ships of the eight-vessel GRSE series.
