Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Tuesday set out the state government's student-welfare figures at a Pratibha Vikas Shivir — a talent camp for meritorious girl students — in Jaipur, saying direct transfers for school uniforms and bags have now reached 66 lakh students across the state, IANS reported, in figures also reported by the Times of India.

Under the financial assistance scheme, ₹800 per student is transferred directly to bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The assistance covers students of Classes 1 to 8 and girls studying in Classes 9 to 12, and is meant for uniforms and school bags. So far, ₹482 crore has been disbursed to 66 lakh students through this mechanism, the Chief Minister said.

Push on girls' education

Highlighting the government's initiatives for girls' education, Sharma said ₹109 crore has been distributed to 3.63 lakh girls under the Gargi Puraskar Yojana, the state's Gargi Award scheme for meritorious girl students. He said daughters are the strength of society and the nation, and that the state government is committed to providing quality education to every student.

The figures announced on Tuesday are cumulative disbursement totals for the two schemes, as stated by the Chief Minister at the Jaipur event — not a single day's transfer. The uniform-and-bag assistance and the Gargi Awards are among the Rajasthan government's main direct-transfer programmes for school students.
