What India took to the Commonwealth table

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is being held in St John's from November 1 to 4 under the theme "Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth", bringing together leaders and representatives from the Commonwealth's 56 member countries to discuss economic development, trade, climate action and international cooperation. India's pitch rests on its home-built digital platforms for public service delivery and financial inclusion, which New Delhi has increasingly presented as a model other developing countries can adopt to expand access to services and support inclusive growth.

Ahead of the leaders' session, Secretary (West) Sibi George addressed the Pre-CHOGM Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting in St John's on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs said. According to the MEA, George emphasised that the Commonwealth should focus on tangible, people-centric outcomes — democratising technology for development, strengthening climate action and disaster resilience, and championing reformed multilateralism. Jaishankar's participation follows his visit to the United States, where he attended the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta on October 30-31, participated in a Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting and held bilateral engagements. What happens next: CHOGM concludes on November 4; any joint communique language on digital cooperation or trade, and Jaishankar's bilateral meetings on the sidelines, will show whether India's DPI pitch converts into Commonwealth programmes.
