Indian Police Service officer Anurag Sujania, a 2014-batch officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has submitted his resignation from the service, citing personal reasons, days after he was removed as Superintendent of Police of Sagar district. He tendered the resignation on November 2, and it is yet to receive a formal decision from the state government.

The state government had issued a transfer order on October 27, moving Sujania from Sagar to the Police Headquarters in Bhopal as Assistant Inspector General. He was replaced as Sagar SP by Sanjeev Kumar Sinha, a 2016-batch officer. The transfer formed part of a broader administrative reshuffle that also involved the Collectors and Superintendents of Police of Sagar and Dewas districts; Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal was also removed in the same October 27 reshuffle.

Resignation follows the Banda hooch tragedy probe

The reshuffle followed the Banda hooch tragedy in Sagar district in early September 2026, in which at least 16 people were officially confirmed dead after consuming illegally manufactured poisonous liquor, suspected to be contaminated with methanol. Sujania was overseeing the investigation into the incident at the time of his transfer. People familiar with developments in the police establishment said the timing of the move had caused discontent, though the officer himself formally attributed his resignation to personal reasons. He could not be contacted for comment.

Originally from Rajasthan and holding an MTech degree, Sujania joined the IPS on December 2, 2014, and was confirmed in service in December 2017. He had been posted as Sagar SP for approximately six months before the transfer; before that, he was serving as Assistant Inspector General at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal. He has previously served as Superintendent of Police in Tikamgarh, Mandsaur and Morena districts, and as Sub-Divisional Officer of Police in Karera.

Chief Minister's meeting, and what happens next

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was scheduled to hold a meeting with senior police officials at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal on the evening of November 3 following the resignation, and Nation Press reported the same day that the Chief Minister chaired a meeting with senior police officers in Bhopal after the officer resigned. The development has drawn attention within the police administration amid ongoing probes into the spurious liquor incidents in Sagar and reports of similar cases in Dewas. The resignation awaits a formal decision by the state government.
