LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has won a second term in Arkansas, defeating Democratic state senator Fred Love in Tuesday's general election, November 3. The Associated Press called the governor's race for the Republican incumbent on election night, and with 2,740 of 2,768 precincts reporting — an estimated 99 percent of the expected vote counted — Sanders held 477,042 votes to Love's 341,621 in the AP count.

The full tally, including Libertarian Colt Shelby, put Sanders at 53.87 percent, Love at 38.58 percent and Shelby at 66,877 votes, or 7.55 percent — a winning margin of more than 135,000 votes. It was a smaller share than the 63 percent Sanders won when she was first elected in 2022, on a night when Democrats were gaining ground nationally, but it was never close: Arkansas Money & Politics reported that every Republican statewide and federal incumbent in Arkansas won on Tuesday, and Talk Business & Politics had Sanders at 54 percent by 10:30 p.m. with just over half of precincts fully reporting.

How the race was run
The contest was set in the March 3, 2026 primaries. Sanders secured the Republican nomination unopposed, while Love won the Democratic primary with 81.0 percent of the vote against businesswoman Supha Xayprasith-Mays. The final public polling pointed the same way as Tuesday's result: a Hendrix College poll conducted October 8–13 among 709 likely voters had Sanders at 51 percent, Love at 32 percent and Shelby at 11 percent, with 6 percent undecided.

Shelby's 7.55 percent was itself a small piece of Arkansas history: according to the election record, he became the first third-party gubernatorial candidate since the late 1800s to win a plurality of the vote in an Arkansas county, carrying his home county of Franklin. The one genuinely competitive federal race in the state was in Congress, where Republican Representative French Hill led Democrat Chris Jones with 51 percent of the vote and 86 percent counted, Arkansas Money & Politics reported.

Background: a Republican state, held end to end
Arkansas is one of the most reliably Republican states in the country, and Tuesday's results kept it that way at every level: the governor's office, the state's U.S. Senate seat — where the AP also called the race for Republican Senator Tom Cotton over Democrat Hallie Shoffner — and every statewide office on the ballot. Sanders, the state's incumbent governor since January 2023, now has a second four-year term running to January 2031, and a state government in Little Rock that remains under single-party control for budgets, taxes, education and state policing.

For Arkansas residents, the practical meaning of the result is continuity: the same governor, the same party in charge of the statehouse, and no change of direction in how the state is run. For the Punjabi and South Asian trucking community that moves freight along Arkansas's interstates — the state sits on some of the busiest east–west freight corridors in the United States and its highway enforcement is run at state level — a settled election means the state rules, inspections and road programs they work under stay in familiar hands for four more years.
Arkansas was one of the places where the national Democratic wave stopped at the state line. Democrats flipped governorships and Senate seats across the country on November 3, but in Arkansas every Republican incumbent held. Sanders's win, at a reduced share of her 2022 vote, keeps a nationally known Republican governor in office through 2030 and keeps Arkansas in the column of states the party can count on.
What happens next
All results remain unofficial until county tabulations are completed and the Arkansas Secretary of State formally certifies them. Sanders's second term begins in January 2027 under the state's normal inauguration timetable. Between now and then, attention in Little Rock turns to the next legislative session and the budget her administration will present with its hold on state government confirmed for another four years.
