KYIV — The death toll from Monday's Russian bombing of an aid distribution point in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, has risen to 37, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday, as rescuers searched the rubble of a former school for a third day — one of the deadliest strikes on civilians this year.

Mykhailo Semikin, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, said rescuers were still searching for survivors in the rubble. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said Russian forces first dropped aerial bombs on the school building as people arrived to collect aid, then struck the shelter with more bombs. Ivan Fedorov, co-head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Defense Council, wrote on Telegram that 59 people were missing, Reuters reported.

The Associated Press, also reporting 37 confirmed deaths on Wednesday, gave a different figure for those still under the rubble: Fedorov said 12 bodies pulled from the debris had been identified so far, and preliminary estimates suggested a further 38 people may still be trapped. The two missing figures — 59 missing in Fedorov's Telegram post, as reported by Reuters, and about 38 possibly trapped, as reported by AP — come from the same regional official at different points in a fast-moving rescue and are reported here separately, not combined. On Tuesday, Baptist pastor Vladyslav Makhovskyi joined the search through the wreckage of the school and its underground shelter, AP reported.

Russia's Defence Ministry said the attack targeted Ukrainian military units around Komyshuvakha and two other settlements, and that up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed. That is Moscow's account, attributed here; it does not match the Ukrainian account of an aid queue and shelter being bombed, and neither side's claim about who was in the building has been independently verified.

What is solid

  • The confirmed death toll from Monday's bombing of the Komyshuvakha school and aid distribution point has risen to 37 — Semikin, via Reuters and AP, Nov 4
  • Rescuers were still searching the rubble on Wednesday, the third day after the strike — Reuters and AP
  • The strike came a day after a six-day ceasefire to evacuate civilians from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky expired — Reuters

What is only claimed

  • How many people remain missing is not settled: Fedorov's Telegram post put the missing at 59 (Reuters), while AP reported a preliminary estimate of about 38 still trapped and 12 bodies identified — both figures are the regional council co-head's, given at different points, and are kept separate here
  • What was hit is disputed: Ukraine says an aid distribution point and shelter; Russia's Defence Ministry says Ukrainian military units around Komyshuvakha and two other settlements — both accounts attributed, neither independently verified

What happens next

The search in Komyshuvakha continues, and the confirmed toll may rise again as more of the rubble is cleared. Diplomatically, the strike hangs over the next round of talks: US envoy Steve Witkoff said on Monday that the United States will bring Ukrainian and Russian delegations together in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11 to discuss ending the war, postwar security agreements and de-escalation.
