AMARAVATI — The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Andhra Pradesh, led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), has made a clean sweep of the state's municipal elections, capturing power in almost all urban local bodies, IANS reported on Tuesday night. The TDP and its allies, the Jana Sena Party (JSP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had bagged the mayor's post in seven municipal corporations and were leading in five more, while the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) was leading in one corporation, according to the results and counting trends available late on Tuesday.

The scale of the swing is the story's context: in the 2021 municipal elections the YSRCP had won all 13 municipal corporations and 86 municipalities, according to the Daily Jagran's results coverage, which also reported the alliance ahead in most bodies through Tuesday evening and noted that counting for Ongole corporation began late, at noon, because of Cyclone Murasu. Polling on Sunday covered 13 municipal corporations and 79 of the 87 municipalities and nagar panchayats; the State Election Commission put turnout at 62.16 per cent — 60,22,411 votes cast out of 96,89,061 electors — and chairperson elections in 17 bodies were unanimous.

The opposition has contested the conduct of the polls: YSRCP president and former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy accused the ruling coalition of rigging at every stage of the municipal elections, according to IANS. That is an allegation by the opposition leader; no finding of rigging by the State Election Commission was reported in the results coverage, and the allegation remains unproven. What happens next: the remaining corporation and municipality results are to be formally declared by the State Election Commission, after which the newly elected mayors and chairpersons take charge of the urban local bodies.
