Raipur, Nov 4: Saurabh Chandrakar, the alleged prime accused in the Mahadev betting app case, has been sent to eight days of police custody, until November 12, with permission to take the accused to Delhi for examination, ANI reported on Wednesday. A special court in Chhattisgarh's Raipur granted the custody to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Earlier in the day, the CBI took Chandrakar out of its office for a medical examination ahead of his production before the court.

Chandrakar was produced on Wednesday, November 4, before Special Judge (CBI) Manoj Kumar Singh Thakur in Raipur. The CBI asked for 10 days' custody to question him; the court granted eight days and permitted the agency to take him to Delhi for questioning, his lawyer Tushar Giri told the Press Trust of India, as reported by The New Indian Express and summarised by AskSpinner. ANI reported that the custody runs until November 12, when he must be produced before the court again.

His counsel, Tushar Giri, opposed the CBI's remand plea, calling it improper and raising questions about the extradition process — arguing that India's request to Oman had received approval only for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case and not the CBI case, and that action could therefore be taken only in matters for which extradition was granted, Nation Press reported. Officials and lawyers from the ED were also present during the proceedings, as the ED has separately sought his remand in its money-laundering case.

On Tuesday, the CBI brought Chandrakar to Raipur from New Delhi after securing a two-day transit remand from a Delhi court. He was arrested in Oman and brought back to India following extradition proceedings, after being detained by the Royal Oman Police following an Interpol Red Corner Notice issued against him; a CBI team specially deputed to Oman escorted him back to the country, ANI reported. Nation Press reported he had been absconding in Dubai since 2023 and was arrested by Oman's Royal Police on July 8, spending 116 days in Omani custody before his return on November 1.

According to the CBI, Chandrakar is wanted in two cases in which chargesheets have already been filed, and the ED has also filed a prosecution complaint against him in a separate case. The CBI investigation into the Mahadev Online Book cases was initiated at the request of the Chhattisgarh government, which transferred 13 FIRs to the agency, Nation Press reported. The agency has described the platform as one of the largest illegal online betting syndicates in the country, operating from outside India; the syndicate allegedly facilitated betting on cricket, football, card games and other events through franchised panels, and allegedly routed proceeds through mule bank accounts and hawala channels. The chargesheets invoke the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, Indian Penal Code provisions on criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery, and the Chhattisgarh Gambling (Prohibition) Act. The ED has also attached several properties in India and abroad in connection with the case. All of these are allegations that have not been tested in court.
