A shooting at a home in the City of Shasta Lake on Tuesday evening set off a high-speed pursuit across Shasta County that ended in Redding with an officer-involved shooting, road closures through the Wednesday morning commute, and a 32-year-old suspect in custody on a no-bail warrant facing two counts of attempted murder, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded at about 7:54 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, to a residence in the 3000 block of Los Gatos Avenue in Shasta Lake after a report that an adult woman had been struck by gunfire and that the suspected shooter had fled the residence in a vehicle, the Sheriff's Office said in its media release. The woman was transported to a local hospital. Her name and condition were not released in the official account, and no law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

Responding deputies located the suspect's vehicle travelling east on Fort Peck Street and initiated a pursuit. The Sheriff's Office said the chase reached excessive speeds and crossed multiple jurisdictions, a Be On The Lookout (BOLO) notification was issued to surrounding law enforcement agencies, and numerous officers from other agencies responded to assist. According to the Sheriff's Office, the suspect fired at pursuing officers multiple times during the chase — an allegation the suspect has not answered in court.

Pursuit ends in Redding: PIT maneuver and officer-involved shooting

The pursuit eventually entered Redding, the Shasta County seat, and came to an end in the area of Cypress Avenue and Hartnell Avenue, where officers performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver to stop the suspect's vehicle. Following the maneuver, the suspect reportedly exited his vehicle and began firing at officers, the Sheriff's Office said. An officer-involved shooting followed, during which the suspect was struck by officers' gunfire. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. KRCR, the Redding television station, also reported that the high-speed chase through Redding began after a woman was shot in Shasta Lake.

Charges are allegations

The Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Reese Colton Churulich, 32. All charges described in this report are allegations in a secured arrest warrant; Churulich is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court, and he remains in custody on a no-bail warrant pending booking into the Shasta County Jail on his medical release.

7:54 p.m.time deputies were called to Los Gatos Avenue, Shasta Lake, Nov. 3
2counts of attempted murder in the arrest warrant
6total charges listed in the warrant
0law enforcement officers injured, per the Sheriff's Office

The arrest warrant secured by authorities lists: two counts of attempted murder (Penal Code 664/187(a)); shooting at an inhabited dwelling (PC 246); violation of a domestic violence restraining order (PC 273.6(a)); possession of a firearm while prohibited by a protective order (PC 29825(b)); felony reckless evading (Vehicle Code 2800.2(a)); and wrong-way evading (VC 2800.4). The presence of the restraining-order and prohibited-firearm charges in the warrant indicates investigators allege Churulich was already barred by a protective order from having a gun — a fact pattern the court, not the public, will now test.

Independent investigation and Wednesday road closures

Because officers fired, the Shasta County Multi-Agency Officer Involved Critical Incident Response Team (OICIRT) was activated and responded to the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing, with further updates to come through OICIRT. The identities of the officers involved have not been released. Officer-involved shootings in California are investigated under this multi-agency protocol precisely so that the agency whose officers fired is not the only one examining what happened.

For Redding drivers, the investigation spilled directly into the Wednesday commute. The Redding Police Department announced hard closures at Cypress Avenue at Beverly Drive, Cypress Avenue at Parkview Avenue, and Hartnell Avenue at Henderson Road, expected to remain in place throughout the Wednesday morning commute, with no specific reopening time given. Cypress Avenue is one of Redding's main east–west routes, and Redding sits on the Interstate 5 corridor through far Northern California — the same corridor Punjabi and other long-haul truckers drive between Sacramento and Oregon — so closures around Cypress and Hartnell meant delays well beyond the immediate neighbourhood while investigators processed the scene.

What happens next

Churulich remains in custody on the no-bail warrant and, according to the Sheriff's Office, will be booked into the Shasta County Jail upon his medical release from hospital, after which an arraignment date would be set in Shasta County Superior Court. The woman shot in Shasta Lake also remains in hospital care per the official account, which gave no update on her condition. OICIRT's findings on the officer-involved shooting will follow its investigation, and the Sheriff's Office has said additional updates will be provided through that team. Anyone with information about the initial Los Gatos Avenue shooting is in the position residents are usually left in after a night like this: the official record so far is the Sheriff's media release, and the next verified facts will come from the court file and the OICIRT investigation.
