The constable, identified as Sanjay Jana, was posted at the Kanksa Traffic Guard and was originally from Asansol. The incident took place on National Highway 19 near the Panagarh Bypass, where he was on duty along with other policemen.

His colleagues immediately rushed him to a hospital in Durgapur, where doctors declared him dead. Police have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. No reason for the act has been officially given.

Jana resided in the quarters at Asansol Police Lines. His death is the second such incident involving a Bengal police officer in about two months: in September, Kolkata Police commando Deepak Tamang, 49, a resident of Kalimpong, was found dead at the Police Training School in Kolkata, according to reports.

Police said the probe into Tuesday night's incident is under way and further details are awaited.
