AGARTALA — Eight people have been arrested so far for allegedly attacking Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ashabari along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura's Sepahijala district, police officials said on Tuesday, in a case in which 19 people have been named. The arrests follow the attack on Monday, November 2, in which three BSF personnel, including a Company Commander, were injured after a mob allegedly attacked them with sticks and bamboo near the international border at Ashabari, under Kalamchaura Police Station in the Boxanagar area.

According to the police account, BSF personnel on patrol had spotted a group of alleged Indian and Bangladeshi smugglers near the border fence and apprehended one man, who subsequently escaped and allegedly told local villagers that he had been assaulted by the personnel. A large crowd then gathered, surrounded a BSF vehicle and attacked the personnel, police said. The mob also allegedly attempted to snatch the rifle of one jawan and damaged the BSF vehicle. These are the police's allegations; the arrested persons have not been convicted of any offence.

The other account, and the case now registered

Local reports carried a different account of how the clash began: they said an altercation broke out near Ashabari Gram Panchayat after a BSF jawan allegedly assaulted a local resident, identified in those reports as Hefzur Rahman, during a smuggling-related dispute involving personnel of the 49th Battalion posted at the Ashabari Border Outpost. Local reports named Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar of Rahimpur BOP among the personnel who reached the spot and were hurt. A BSF official was reported as saying the force had lodged a complaint at Kalamchaura Police Station and that an FIR had been registered on charges including attempt to murder, snatching of weapons and obstructing government officials — all allegations that remain to be tested in court.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, strongly condemned the attack and confirmed the arrests on his official X account: “In connection with the assault on BSF personnel at Ashabari, Boxanagar, eight accused persons have been arrested. All those involved will be brought to justice, and strict legal action will be taken against them in accordance with the law.” Police said an intensive search operation is under way to apprehend the remaining accused, and that the situation in the area is now under control and normalcy has been restored.

This is a developing follow-up to the November 2 attack itself, when three BSF jawans were injured at Ashabari and the Chief Minister ordered strict action. Read the earlier report: Three BSF Jawans Injured in Ashabari Clash in Tripura

What happens next: police say the search for the remaining named accused continues, and the arrested persons are expected to be produced before a court as the investigation proceeds. Awaaz Punjab will update this story if police confirm further arrests or the BSF issues a detailed statement.
